Welcome back everyone! The 2012 – 2013 band season is upon us. We have already had the first practice of the Jazz, Beginner and Intermediate bands. Monday the 10th of September is the first Senior band practice and I am really looking forward to it. I can tell you there were some tired embouchure’s after Tuesday and Thursdays practice but the Intermediate and Jazz Bands are already sounding good. Senior Band the baton is to you!
See you all on Monday,
Danny Olsen

Thank you to all who joined the society this past Sunday for our annual Fathers Day Concert at Queens Park. While the weather early in the day was questionable, it cleared long enough for all 4 groups to perform.
Here are a few pictures from the concert. We would love to see more pictures, so let us know if you would like to share those that you took.

Our very own Jim Kempton (Senior Band Percussionist) is going to be taking part in this years Ride to Conquer Cancer and needs our support!
“I’m captain of a 5 member team for the Ride to Conquer Cancer called ” Team Beat It” . As part of our fundraising this year we are doing a casual evening of jazz set up as a semi cabaret style. The venue will be held in the parish hall of the Holy Trinity Anglican Church – 1440 w12th Ave. Vancouver ( southwest corner of 12th and Hemlock ). I have asked a guest vocalist to join us for a couple numbers as well as guest soloists. The venue will also be licenced for beer and wine plus light snacks and will feature various items in a silent auction as well as a 50/50 draw and door prizes. Tickets are $25 ( tax deductable ) all proceeds go our team helping us each make our $2500 minimum which in turn go straight to the BC Cancer Foundation to support research. Doors open at 730pm and we play from 8pm to 11pm.”

The New Westminster and District Band has a long and musically excellent past. In fulfilling my role as President I feel that I am paying back and maybe paying forward a little. As a boy when I first joined the beginner band I didn’t pay much attention to the work that was going on behind the scenes but as I grew older I recognised the efforts required to keep an organization such as the New Westminster and District Band Society moving forward musically and organizationally.
Today the New Westminster and District Band Society offers a unique musical experience by facilitating 3 levels of Concert Band (beginner, Intermediate, and Senior) as well as a Senior Jazz Band. A special experience for me was playing with both of my children, my wife, and my father in law, in the Senior Band, as we were all together for a few years. All of our bands are open to all ages. For us it is all about where you are in your musical journey.
If you are a beginner, or if you and your children would like to take on a new challenge; if you started your musical journey at school but would like to be at the top of your class; or if you played years ago and would like to re-experience playing with a top- performing Concert or Jazz Band; please check out our website and come to visit us on Monday or Thursday nights (06:30pm).
Hope to meet you soon,
Danny Olsen
